Wordpress Blog Sidebar SEO Tip
Every Wordpress theme I have seen has put H2 tags on the Sidebar headings. I never really questioned this, until I visited the site of Courtney Tuttle. He likes to turn the most popular Wordpress themes into SEO Optimized Wordpress Themes. In reading the notes about what he changed on each theme, I noticed on most of them, he was changing the H2 Sidebar heading to an H3. His explaination was that the H2s were supposed to show the 2nd most important titles on the site. Sidebar headings are definitely not H2 worthy. Like I said, I never questioned the H2 sidebar heading, but when I saw that Court was changing them to H3, it just clicked. Why would you not want to have the sidebar headings be an H2? H1 for the title of your blog, H2 for the blog post titles, and H3 for the sidebar headings. The sidebar headings are not very important, and if I could, I would probably make them H4 or H5. I can’t do that because you need keep them in order, i.e. you cannot have a H1, H2, and then H4 without an H3.
The Code If you have a dynamic sidebar, you cannot change the theme, you need to change a Wordpress file in the wp-includes folder. The file you need to change is widgets.php under this folder. Right-click on the link, download the file, unzip the php file, and overwrite the widgets.php file in the wp-includes folder. Don’t trust me? Go to the widgets.php file and search for “H2″. Everywhere there is an H2, replace it with an H3. Pretty simple to do, but hopefully it will pay off big time. One more thing you need to do is change your stylesheet. In my stylesheet, I just had to change the “sidebar h2″ section to “sidebar h3″. You may have to tinker with it to get the text looking correct, but again, it should be worth it.
